Every year for our Christmas tree we have some sort of makeshift star or angel that is usually an ornament I put on that spot. Every year I decide this is the year I will put something cute and big up there.
Then one day when I was scheming to put my decorations up before Thanksgiving
(sneakily against my husbands will) I had an idea.
(btw-not recommended. He didn't like Christmas bombarding his Thanksgiving so much)
This year I am going to put something big up there and I am going to use that star a friend gave me when she was de-junking her home. Originally I was going to spray paint it and add glitter but it was so cold outside and spray paint and cold doesn't go well together so I've read.
So whats the next best option I had?
Yarn. I LOVE yarn and had already made a new yarn wreath like last years a bit to match my Christmas tree for this year. I love using it as ribbon for gifts too. It adds a fun texture and looks a little less fancy but still sweet and handmade. I love handmade looking gift wraps.

So here is the Before photo of the Star.
Happy Independance day! .. no..wait. never mind.
Here is the AFTER photo of the star.
Want to know how I did it? A fun quick photo tutorial is below. Email me if you have any questions, but really, I think your genius enough to figure it out. Just go with the flow and eventually whatever you are covering will get covered. :) (There are so many things you can cover with yarn. Since doing this craft and last years wreath anything yarn jumps out to me in blogland. I'll share a few links with you tomorrow for more ideas.Have one of your own? Email it to me and I will pass it along!)
Items you will need :
- A metal home decor star.
- One pack of yarn, thicker the better. Any color to match your trees decor.
- glitter. (I love Martha Stewart's glitter especially!)
Start out with a hot glue gun. Some super cute Yarn in a fun color you love. My choice: Fuchsia of course.
Add a dot of glue and just start wrapping slowly around adding a bit of glue to the top side of the star as you go. I didn't do much,. When you pull it tight it stays on its own pretty good.
See below, where my finger is pointing. That's where I would add glue. Not the whole star. Just on the edge.
Now here is the tricky part. What to do? What to do? You get to the end and wonder where to go. Take the yarn and continue across all the way to the point of an opposite part of the star.
Like so. Add glue along the way.
Now, wrap that tip of the star the same as the other one you did adding hot glue down the line.
Continue to each star point until all are covered. Now you will have small sections in the middle needing to be covered. Here comes the part that I didn't love so much but would never do any different because it looks so darn cute.
Take your yarn after you cut and secured the end from the points. Take the yarn and careful add hot glue to the star and cover in sections as big or small as you want in a circular design until it is covered. Have a tool handy near by like a Popsicle stick to push the yarn down so you don't burn your fingers as much as I did. YIKES.
Keep filling it in. Then to top it off I sprayed it with spray glue and dumped fushia glitter all over it. It sprakles way more then you can see in the After pic. I love it and think it turned out just perfect for our style.
Hope you are enjoying a very Merry Christmas!
